BACKGROUND:The Gray Man at the Raven Cycle wiki
Plot synopsis for The Dream Thieves
PERSONALITY:The Gray Man is a hitman for hire, and is eerily calm when he’s out on a job. We never actually see him kill anyone, but he’s rather cold when he tortures people for information, and threatening to kill them. He claims that he takes no joy from it and can stand to do it because he doesn’t think about it while he’s working. As he puts it “I turn that part of my brain off”.
However, he doesn’t like the idea of simply being known as a hit man, and prefers to be known for his academic side. The Gray Man has an interest in Anglo-Saxon history and literature, and even wrote a book called Fraternity in Anglo-Saxon Verse. He occasionally cheers himself up by reminding himself that his book is sometimes used as required readings in schools. He likes to read old English books for fun, and he can recite poetry in modern and old English.
Despite being a hit man, the Gray Man is friendly and courteous to everybody he doesn’t need to kill or rough up. Even then, he’ll probably be polite while carrying out a job. One scene in the second book even has him perform a small gesture of affection by making Maura a flower crown. He is capable of forming attachments, like with Maura, and he put Ronan’s life over his own, showing that he does have a conscience.
The Gray Man is generally a truthful person. He’ll lie if he has to, but if he’s confronted or caught in a lie, he’ll tell the truth. He prefers to tell the truth, but he’s pragmatic enough to know when to lie, such as when he tried lying to Greenmantle about the Graywaren. He doesn’t seem to have any issues with dodging the truth, and will try to avoid giving out too many personal details about himself, such as his real name.
The Gray Man’s greatest fear is his sadistic and abusive older brother finding him. His desire to get away from his brother and distance himself from his past is what led him to discard his real name and let others simply call him Mr. Gray. He sometimes has days where he goes into a depressive state, which he calls “gray days”, in which he stops keeping track of time and can’t get the energy to get out of bed.
POWER:The Gray Man has no canon superpowers. Therefor, I’d like to give him the ability of Shadow Camouflage.
The Gray Man’s power is that he can melt into nearby shadows. By standing in darkness, he can vanish and become one with the dark. His power is strongest when there’s very little light around. This power makes it easy for him to spy on others, or get the drop on them. He can also use his power for easy travel, by simply blending into a shadow and moving along the wall or floor at faster speeds than it would take to walk.
However, he cannot blend into a shadow that’s too small. For example, he can’t simply blend into the shadow of a coffee mug because that’s far too small. The shadow must be big enough for either both his hands or both is feet to fit into. His power is weakest when he’s in a brightly lit room or if very little shadows are being cast outside, like if it’s close to noon or overcast.
He does have some fighting skills in canon, and knows many ways to kill people. He’s a good shot with a gun, and is also a very good fighter. He actually manages to overpower the older two Lynch brothers, whom were trained how to box.
〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:[The Gray Man figures out how to use the communicator quickly. It’s no different than the phone he had back on his world, after all.
A poem written in modern English, then Old English is typed in and posted, like a post just to test out the text function. The Gray Man doesn’t really do the whole social media thing, especially given his profession.
Might as well test the video function while he’s at it.]
If everybody in this world has superpowers, my job may have become much harder.
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:[The Gray Man isn’t sure why he’s suddenly in this new city, when he’s just been about to drive away from Henrietta. It could be because of the ley line. The part about him now having superpowers is what really takes him by surprise. Shadow Camouflage, they call it.
Still, he’s an entire world away from his brother, and that’s a blessing, at least. Even if it means he can never see Henrietta, Virginia again. One can only hope those thugs didn’t turn back around when they lost the Gray Man.
The Gray Man stands at a window, overlooking the city. He wonders if there’s any bookstores that sell books written in Old English, or books of Anglo-Saxon poetry. His car hadn’t been taken with him, and it had all his books.
He looks down at the fresh tattoo, talking to nobody in particular, even if someone were to overhear him.]
Honestly, this is not how I imagined my day going.
